Phantasy Star Online 2 is an enigma that genuinely puzzles me. I am shocked. Not only that it required Sega eight years to PSO2 Meseta eventually bring it outside of Japan and SEA despite the comparative success of PSO and PSU from the Western economy, but that Microsoft of publishers paid out of their ass to get a timed exclusive launch of an eight year old Japan exclusive to the Xbox One – a console which flopped so hard the PS4 has outsold it by two to 1. I will admit, a lot of folks have been awaiting for Phantasy Star Online 2 so that I can kinda see why Microsoft would be attempting to get some points. The SEA version lasted a mere four decades in contrast, poorly preserved by Playpark and was missing years worth of content upgrades, was translated. However, this ship sailed years back. Anybody who wanted to play Phantasy Star Online 2 could have enrolled on the Western version’s site, downloaded a buff patch and already established themselves.
Look around in the relevant subs. People went mad and crashed the servers. Turns out that making a JP Sega accounts, going through the kana captcha, and installing an (incomplete) translation mod is a small barrier to entry for the majority of players… Plus there are lots of console-only gamers out there too that are likely interested. In terms of Microsoft being the ones to do it, many Sega fans still see the Xbox since the Dreamcast’s successor. Sega gave the OG Xbox many exclusives such as Panzer Dragoon Orta, JSRF, Gunvalkyrie, and so on, and they just stuck with Xbox. It is silly, but there. The longer they wait to place this on PC the higher the likelyhood it will fail there. With New World and Graymoor around the horizon shortly this almost 10 year old delayed match wont stand a chance the more they hold off. It’s F2P, and the two of these games do not fill the identical niche as PSO2 so that they aren’t direct competitors. What makes you believe people won’t only play all three? All 3 is a lot to ask of a person. Individuals who would have tried this will be inclined to check at it as soon as they are diverted by a brand new eso growth or new world once it strikes. PSO2 is outdated. And its really going to jive already with people who have nostalgia for PSO. People have waited waaaaay. Also the xbox comes out this year nobody is purchasing at the moment. It is just a further delay that is pointless.
Lol the 2 are not equal. Pso2 is old, BDO came out in normal korean style a couple of years later. Ping mattered in BDO, it will not in PSO. BDO didn’t censor nor require non invasive requirements like win10 along with a microsoft account to play for no reason. BDO did not have a fan translation group translating everything still and the moment it released, PSO does will. Who knows, I could be wrong but it feels like Microsoft/SEGA are putting Phantasy Star Online 2 up to neglect in the west. Seems like SEGA got tired of idiots wanting them to vent it (if they had all of the tools handed to them to play) and so are ultimately applying this as an excuse to never fetch yet another mmo over here again when it fails.
Btw if someone wishes to know why it wasn’t localized sooner that’s actually mostly Gearbox’s fault again fuck you Randy: PSO2’s original planned western localization and maintenance budget was hailed from projected Colonial Marines profits, which should happen to be a Slam Dunk awarded the value of the Aliens new – Obviously Gearbox found a way to fuck that up. That was a bomb so awful that Sega of America had to go into Austerity Mode and lay off nearly all their Localization staff, not only permanently delay PSO2. Of which buy Phantasy Star Online 2 Meseta they would not recover until Sega had and bought Atlus all that laid off staff is effectively replaced by Atlus USA.
